Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel (TKO-LTT) comprises the construction of a 4.2 km dual two-lane highway connecting Tseung Kwan O in the east and East Kowloon in the west. About 2.2 km of the TKO-LTT is in form of rock tunnels and semi-caverns with excavation width and height up to 30 m. Key site constraints include the existing railway tunnels, squatter village, historic buildings, high-rise residential buildings, fresh water service reservoir, restored landfill and other adjacent developments in a densely-populated area. Multi-staged ground investigation works including conventional boreholes and horizontal directional coring (HDC) were carried out. The tunnel alignment is underlain by granite, greisenized granite and volcanic tuff through a number of weakness zones, fault zones and geological contacts. This paper outlines the key geotechnical aspects and challenges during the planning, site investigation and detailed design of the TKO-LTT. The methodology for ground investigation, geotechnical assessment, tunnel support design, monitoring proposal and contract strategy are also discussed.
