A new lining design for tunnel is based on the use of a polymer based, double bonding, sprayable, waterproofing membrane. Due to its double bonding capability, it creates a composite of inner and outer concrete lining, allowing a reduction of the total lining thickness, resulting in a more cost effective and sustainable tunnel design. A test program has been established where the composite structure is subjected to cyclic temperature variations to induce reoccurring stress momentum at the membrane interfaces. Simulating reoccurring stress induction to the composite tunnel lining provides valuable information to assess its long-term double bonding properties and durability of the waterproofing membrane in a tunnel environment. The membrane bonding was evaluated after more than 50 stress cycles as an intermediate status, measurements are ongoing.
