Los Angeles Metro Historic Broadway Station
Historic Broadway Station is one of the three underground stations that is part of the Los Angeles Metro’s $1.81-billion design-build Regional Connector Project. The project is in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. This paper discusses the challenges faced by Metro and the Design Builder, Regional Connector Constructors (a joint Venture of Skanska USA and Traylor Bros., Inc.) during the excavation of the station. Elements to be discussed include hanging the largest Hobas Pipe storm drain, underpinning a basement that is about 45 ft wide, 40 ft below existing grade, and excavation of one of the largest caverns using the SEM method in the city of Los Angeles. Various redesign and resequencing during the construction, some due to the delay in utility relocation will also be discussed.
