Fire Protection and Life Safety System of Paseo del Bajo corridor in Buenos Aires
The main objective of this text is to describe the fire protection and life safety global system chosen for Paseo del Bajo corridor, located at Buenos Aires City Old Town, Argentina. Its main corridor is exclusive for heavy duty vehicles, mainly trucks (even carrying dangerous goods) and long-distance buses. “Paseo del Bajo” is 7.1 kilometers long, 4.0 kilometers of the project runs underground, as a semi covered trench. The goal of the system is to minimize the impact of possible incidents following these aspects: • Enable people´s evacuation with emergency exits every 250 meters on each side of the buried road. • Enable the speedy arrival of emergency services (exclusive accesses for outside aid, a 2.5 meters’ shoulder, mobile barriers every 500 meters, and emergency response plan were elaborated). • Guarantee an exclusive firefighting water reservoir of 340m3, and an input hose connected to a river for extra needs. • Minimize the fire spread in the drainage system trench (firewall sewer). • Provide a structural fireproof protection for the trench structure (panels RF120). • Provide an easy safety management with an intelligent traffic system (ITS). • Provide safety collision system for heavy vehicles, placing TL5 central concrete barrier.
