South Island Line (East) (SIL(E)) is a recent railway line extension that opened for passenger service in December 2016, connecting the current Mass Transit Railway (MTR) network from the existing Admiralty Station on Hong Kong Island to the island’s southern side. SIL(E) Contract 901 - Admiralty Integrated Station and SCL Enabling Works involved the expansion of the existing station with the addition of three new underground levels to a depth of 45m below ground level, which would accommodate the SIL(E) and the future Shatin Central Link. Construction of these additional underground levels using top down methods for the new platform and associated tracks required the underpinning of the existing Island Line (ISL) tunnel structure, which activities were carried out whilst maintaining normal service on the operating railway line. This underpinning consisted of a load transfer system using composite steel and concrete beams and modular steel columns to support the ISL tunnel. This paper describes the design aspects and construction sequence of the ISL underpinning at ADM station.
