Roof Collapse in a Tunnel of Kiratpur Ner Chowuk (KNCEL), Project in State of Himachal Pradesh, India and Lesson Learnt for Future
Infrastructure Industry in India has been experiencing rapid growth in its different sectors. India’s road infrastructure has seen consistent improvements in last few years. The construction of four lane highway from Kiratpur to Ner Chowk is one such project. This highway will pass through 5 numbers of tunnels which are under construction. The Tunnel no. 4, is one of the tunnels which is under development. After excavation of the tunnel 4 up to chainage 267 meters from west portal (portal 1), tunnel roof at chainage 95 meters from the portal 1 had collapsed on 11th Sept., 2015. The overburden above tunnel crown or the tunnel near this location was about 40m.In this accident three workers had been trapped inside the tunnel. Out of three workers, two workers were rescued safely after 10 days of collapse and one worker did not survive as he got trapped under collapsed debris. The present paper addresses the issue of (i) tunnels geology (ii) tunnel collapse, (iii) rescue operation (iv) collapse mechanism (v) reasons of collapse (vi) original design & treatment proposed in revised design (vii) relevant issues important in tunnel design in young Himalayan geology (vii) lessons learnt for future in design, construction, and safety of tunnels (viii) conclusion and recommendations.
