Correlations between Crucial Rock Properties and Drilling Rate Index for Hard Rock Tunnels
In this paper, rock properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) and density (D) of rock is examined to estimate the drilling rate index (DRI) for hard rock tunneling. For this aim, dataset having 63 data-points is established and then several linear and non-linear simple and multiple regression models have been conducted to develop the most accurate model to estimate the DRI. As a result of simple regressions, it is found that the UCS, BTS and D have an effect on DRI with correlation coefficient (r) of 0.55; 0.61; 0.28 respectively. It is obvious that those results are not good enough to estimate the DRI as a function of single parameter; however, applying multiple regression analysis, drilling rate index is predicted as a function of UCS, BTS and D of rocks with r of 0.75.
