  An Overview of TBM Tunnels in Hong Kong

  Mechanized tunnelling method is increasingly adopted in tunnel projects. The various Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) types can be adopted for different ground conditions from hard rock, mixed ground to soft soils. The range of the TBM diameter starts from less than 1m to more than 17m, enabling its application in various public facilities in urban development, from power cable tunnel, water supply tunnel, to metro subway and road tunnel, etc. This paper aims to present an overview of the tunnels in Hong Kong which were constructed by TBM. The TBM configurations for specific requirement / constraints of some projects will be summarised. The diverse considerations in construction will be explored. Discussion on the limitation of TBM application will also be included.
