The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs for 64 km between Austria and Italy, making it the longest underground railway tunnel in the world. The BBT consists of two single track tubes, connecting cross passages every 333 m, an exploratory tunnel and three emergency stations. 109 km of more than 230 km of the entire project are already excavated. At the Austrian side the excavation works with drill and blast headings and with TBM drives with segmental lining are currently ongoing. Due to the poor and changing ground conditions and huge amount of predicted fault zones the requirements for the TBM with segmental lining are very high. In the area of the emergency stops, a variety of underground construction activities are carried out in the immediate vicinity, partly in very difficult geological conditions. The paper will give a detailed overview over the status of the entire project, will describe selected aspects from the excavation works and will give an outlook to the coming challenges and schedule.
