Road Tunnel Fire Safety: Developments in Standards and Fire Protection Technologies
Road tunnel fires have been the subject of extensive study over the last 20 years that have passed since two major tunnel fires in Europe that occurred within 2 months of each other caused public concern over tunnel safety. Stakeholders such as government bodies, owners and designers are today better aware of the likely severity and consequences of a fire in a tunnel due major research work carried out in the intervening years. Increased levels of fire safety has since been adopted that often include requirements for insulation of the tunnel structure and equipment/services within it against fires where temperatures of up to 1350°C are known to be possible. This paper reviews the background to some of the key developments of the systems and materials used to provide fire protection in tunnels and discusses some key factors in their use.
