In the construction of deep shafts in rock, overcoming the problems caused by fissures and cracks in the ground is a highly critical task which can mean the success or failure of the project. Fissure Grouting is a technique of ground treatment where cracks, fissures and crevices particularly in rock are filled with cement based grouting materials to reduce the permeability and increase the strength of the treated rock mass. The North-South Transmission Cable Tunnel project adopted Fissure Grouting in the construction of three 50-70m deep shafts to prevent water ingress induced by the encountered fissures in the underlying Bukit Timah Granite layer with varying degrees of success. For Contract NS2 a chemical grout material, NOH2O, was used. NOH2O is a rubberised polymer emulsion and has been applied in several underground projects in Singapore before. This paper provides an overview of the implementation of the Fissure Grouting method with a focus on chemical grouting (NOH2O) for contract NS2, going through the design, construction, and tests of the technique, as well its resulting performance.
