Yamatogawa-route of Hanshin Expressway is 9.9 km long and the most of them are cut-and-cover tunnels. As the slab and wall of the cut and cover tunnel is generally deep, many countermeasures were carried out to prevent thermal cracking and followed water leakage. Nevertheless, penetrated thermal cracks were observed to the concrete slabs and walls. The leaked coming-in water would make bad affect to the tunnel pavement; therefore, the porous concrete base course for enhancing the drainage function was adopted to the pavement base course where tunnel and transverse gradient is almost flat and where many thermal penetrated cracks were observed. The concrete compressive strength of the porous concrete was set to 20N/mm2 in order not to occur cracks in the body of the base course of the pavement. The required drainage capacity is set as permeability coefficient: 0.01cm/s or above, and void ratio: 20±3.5% in order to satisfy the drainage function to the leaked water. Field test was also performed to make sure construction procedure and quality. Application of porous concrete to pavement base course is a big challenge. This study is very informative for effective maintenance of cut-and-cover tunnel.
