The S. Caterina Road Tunnel in Sicily (Italy): Intensive Use of Jet-Grouting Stabilization
The 900 m long single tube S. Caterina tunnel in Sicily involves mediocre geological materials (yellow sands with calcarenite levels, blue-grey marly clays) and it crosses an area with many existing buildings under low overburden (max. 30 m). Thus, settlement control is one of the main issues to reduce the impact on the surroundings; for this reason, typical sections were defined with mono-fluid jetgrouting columnar treatments on both the cavity boundary and the face front. In Detailed Design phase, a combination of numerical analysis 2D / 3D and analytical methods from literature were used to identify (and consequently, prevent) possible damages to buildings caused by tunnel excavation. Finally, a detailed surface and underground monitoring was designed, in order to verify the correctness of design assumptions.
