Development of viable construction methodologies and sequences was an integral part of the Reference Design for the new Sydney Metro platforms at Central Station, beneath existing Platforms 13 to 15. This paper outlines the approaches proposed to protect existing assets; maintain rail operations; and maintain passenger movements; whilst facilitating construction of the new metro station. Critical elements included: 1. 2. 3. Central Walk, a new eastern pedestrian tunnel to be constructed at shallow depth under the main suburban platforms and integrated into the new metro platforms, requiring challenging underground construction immediately under live tracks that service the majority of the Sydney rail network. Running tunnel construction through the station footprint. The existing complex has a large number of building and railway services that run throughout existing underground routes many of which required isolation, shifting, upgrade and/or de-commissioning. The underground construction strategy needed to reflect the timing and staging requirements of all these services essential to the day to day operation of the station. The construction project is one of the most challenging ever undertaken in a live rail facility in Australia. 1. Design Stages for the Central Station's metro rail upgrade, which has delivered a plan for an efficient, constructible design that is now being implemented. It should be noted that the Reference Design outlined in this paper has been refined by the Central Walk and metro upgrade contractor.
