We have developed a new high-speed laser remote sensing system for detection of the defects in the lining concrete of tunnels. The laser hammering system (LHS) has same measurement principle as the conventional hammering test, and it consists of the hammering laser as a hammer, laser vibrometer as an inspector's ear, and high speed scanning system. The advantages of LHS are remote sensing (> 5m), high-speed measurement (up to 50 Hz), and digital recording. Inspection in road tunnels is demonstrated by LHS mounted on 4t loading vehicle, and we have succeeded in detecting defects in the lining concrete of tunnels and the result was consistent with conventional hammering test. The inspection results can be data-linked to the tunnel surface imaging system, MIMM (Mobile Imaging Technology & Mobile Mapping System). By using the total inspection system combined LHS and MIMM, the efficiency of the maintenance of the tunnels will be significantly improved.
