  Discussion on Engineering Treatment Consideration for Encountering Gas in New Wu-shan-ling Divert Water Tunnel

  Wu-shan-ling tunnel has operated more than 80 years. The state of tunnel lining deterioration could affect the original function. For maintaining the steady water supply in southern plain area, it is necessary to build New Wu-shan-ling divert water tunnel. The Wu-shan-ling tunnel is located in Nanxi District, Tainan City, between the No. 2 Zengwen Bridge and the No. 3 Zengwen Bridge on the right bank of Zengwen River, which is about 80m away from the east side of the existing Wu-shan-ling Tunnel. The total length of tunnel is 3,422 m and 5.4 m in width. It will cross the Tangenshan Sandstone during the construction stage. In the same stratum, there were several gas explosion occurred in Wu-shan-ling tunnel. Therefore this project is probably at the risk of gas burst during the construction. This report will take this tunnel as an example to illustrate the geological survey, safety management and countermeasures of gas tunnel.
