A Case Study on Construction Technology of Large Section Horseshoe-Shaped EPB-TBM Tunnel

Previously, mining method is usually used to construct mountain tunnel in loess strata, and shield method has no precedent. Baicheng tunnel of Menghua railway is a mountain tunnel located in loess area. Through contrastive analysis, the proposal of using a large section horseshoe-shaped EPB-TBM with multi-cutterhead to construct Baicheng tunnel was adopted. Afterwards, the TBM was developed by tackling technology problems, and the reinforcement concrete segment structure with horseshoe-shaped section was designed. This mechanized method was put into practice in Baicheng tunnel. A comprehensive construction technology of large section horseshoe-shaped shield tunnel was formed. It has been successfully applied to Baicheng tunnel and remarkable economic, safety and social benefits have been achieved. This paper aims to share a new solution to the construction of loess mountain tunnel. It could be effectively applied to the construction of large section mountain tunnel in loess strata or other soil strata.
