Ventilation System in Large Hydro Projects in India: A Case Study of Successful Implementation of Effective Ventilation System at Tehri Pump Storage Project
ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress, WTC2020 and 46th General Assembly Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 11-17 September 2020 Ventilation System in Large Hydro Projects in India: A Case Study of Successful Implementation of Effective Ventilation System at Tehri Pump Storage Project Rakesh Kumar Khali Group Project Manager Hindustan Construction Co. Limited, LBS Marg, Vikhroli, Mumbai – 400083 Abstract: Ventilation System in any large underground projects is the lifeline for the man and machinery involved in the project. The success of construction in such projects is greatly influenced by the effectiveness of ventilation systems. This paper focuses primarily on helping organizations involved in planning and execution of such projects where appropriate ventilation system for ensuring congenial atmosphere during the entire life span of the project and for carrying out periodic audit of the ventilation systems, so that remedial measures, if so required, could be undertaken well in advance for incorporating necessary modification in the ventilation system. For this purpose, the paper provides the practical approach adopted at the Tehri Pump Storage Project (4x250 MW) for planning, and for assessment for appropriateness of the ventilation system in the light of the norms, for standard of ventilation accepted worldwide. The author has been actively associated in planning, construction and Project management of various large hydroelectric projects, Rail & road tunnels, large size of caverns, Metros etc. in India and abroad. The paper gives an overview with regard to selection of size, type of flexible ducts, limitations & scope of axial flow fans in series, parallel, and booster operations. Steps have also been suggested for proper installations, repair and maintenance of flexible ducts for ensuring sustained effectiveness of ventilation system and for timely completion of the Tehri Pump Storage Project and its safety & economy. 1. Exhaust ventilation – sucking consumed and loaded air out of the tunnel, employing reinforced flexible ducts or spiral steelducts. (iii) Circulation ventilation schemes – mainly used in double bread projects, where fresh air is introduced via one bore and consumed air is extracted via the second.
