During shield tunneling at extremely great depths and under extremely high groundwater pressure, various construction loads, such as jack thrust, back-fill material injection pressure, tail grease pressure and tail brush pressure affect the segments of the ring to counter the action of high groundwater pressure. Since in recent years, the shield tunnel has been constructed at increasingly deeper levels underground, many accidents of damage to the segments have been reported which are assumed to be caused by such construction loads working in particular on curved alignments of the tunnel. With this project, we designed the segments taking into account the loads acting during tunneling. Focusing on tail grease pressure, one of the construction loads, this paper verifies the validity of the conditions set at the time of design, referring to the data collected during tunneling, and proposes a design technique and construction method for a future shield tunneling at great depths and under high groundwater pressure.
