Fires in tunnel is a major hazard. Tunnel fires also cause major damage to the surrounding structures. Limited escape facilities and difficulties encountered by intervention forces in gaining access to the tunnel call for extensive safety arrangements, which must be complementary and mutually coordinated. It is usually assumed that because the structure is constructed using concrete that it is inherently fire resistant, therefore no additional fire protection measures to be taken. Unfortunately experience over the years has shown that this is not necessarily the case and consideration must be given to performance and behaviour of Concrete Structures in the event of fire.Bluewaters island is a development under construction near to Jumeirah beach residence coastline. The project has a tunnel, accessing the car park areas and the tunnel construction has to meet NFPA 502 regulations. PROMATECT-H a high density Calcium Silicate board manufactured by Promat tested to meet the performance under RWS fire curve for a duration of 120 minutes, and is approved by Dubai civil defence to protect the tunnel concrete structure. This paper addresses the structural fire protection challenges, which specifically apply to the Middle East region.Dubai Bluewaters Island is a man-made mixed use island located 500 metres (1,600 ft) off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence near Dubai Marina in United Arab Emirates. Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel, forms the unique centrepiece of this development that is poised to become one of the world’s largest tourism hotspots. The island will also feature distinctive retail, residential, hospitality and entertainment zones. Connected to the mainland with a direct roadway from the Sheikh Zayed Road, Bluewaters Island will operate a mono rail system to transport visitors to the entertainment zone from the metro station. In addition, a pedestrian bridge will link the island to the JBR beachfront. The project has a tunnel with 432 Mtr length, 8 mtrs Width and 10 Mtrs height. The tunnel gives an access to the car park areas.
