Mechanized tunneling is vital to ensure necessary infrastructure development in urban area. The use of shield machines for soft ground has been established for many years. When budgeting such tunneling projects, precise planning and coordination in terms of tunneling technique choice (e.g. EPB or Slurry-shield), excavation strategy and tool wear prediction are required. Tool wear is usually predicted based on geological surveys, laboratory tests, and expertise gathered from previous tunneling projects. With the RUB Tunneling Device, the applicationoriented tribological system of a TBM tool can be analyzed experimentally. The interactions between load spectrum (machine and excavation strategy), counterbody (soil at the tunnel face), base unit (excavation tool) and ambient/intermediate media (water, foam, bentonite slurry) can be investigated. This unique setup allows to investigate the influence of a support or conditioning media on the wear of the excavation tools within their interaction with soil at the tunnel face. The addition of water, foam or slurry influences the soil mechanical properties of the tunnel face and thus the cutting forces on the tools. Due to the construction of the set-up, the changes caused by the ambient medium can be evaluated in realistic way.
