Abrasive waterjet cutting technology is used for rock tunnelling and mining because the process is eco-friendly. To estimate precisely the waterjet operating time and cost, it is important to verify the kerf depth generated by the power of the abrasive waterjet power (e.g., water pressure, water flow rate, or traverse speed). In this study, rock excavation using an abrasive waterjet cutting system is introduced; and variation of the kerf depth with the power of the abrasive waterjet is explored based on experimental data for hard granite rock. An energy model of the abrasive waterjet is used to analyze the relationship between kerf depth and abrasive waterjet power for hard rock. The relationship is shown as a non-linear curve. In addition, the cutting time is estimated for a target cutting depth of 500 mm, considering the energy loss due to the number of cutting passes.
