Utility Tunneling: A Solution for Managing the Urban Underground Space in China
On a global basis, utility tunneling has been used to improve the effective management of urban underground space and to make expansion and maintenance of pipelines and cables safer, more cost effective, and easier. China is the first country to provide the leadership in establishing utility tunneling as a national priority to meet the challenges for congested underground urban conditions. The China approach can serve as a global model. Based on the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association - Committee on Education and Training (ITA-CET) Foundation report, by the end of 2016 more than 2000 km (1242 miles) of utility tunnels have been built in 147 cities in china. The Chinese government has plan for Chinese cities to continue the construction of another 200 km (124 miles) of utility tunneling in 2017. This paper reviews the history and the future prospect of the utility tunneling in China and discusses how it was able to centralize the installation of power, telecommunications, water (drinking water, wastewater and stormwater), and oil and gas networks.Recipient :
