The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs for 64 km between Austria and Italy, making it the longest underground railway tunnel in the world. The BBT consists of two single track tubes, connecting cross passages every 333 m and an exploratory tunnel – which lies between and 12 m below the main tunnels. About 76 km of in total 230 km of the entire project are already excavated. Since spring 2017 work is ongoing at four intermediate points of attack. At the Austrian side the remaining tunnel works originally have been planned to be contracted in one huge tunnel lot. Due to the result of the feasibility study of the use of TBM the lot has been divided in two lots with the idea to get the results from the exploratory tunnel in those sections where feasibility was critical. The first tunnel lot was awarded in December 2017. This lot consist of 4 TBM drives with segmental lining and an excavation diameter of 10.5 m. Due to the poor and changing ground conditions and huge amount of predicted fault zones the requirements for the machine are quite high. The tender documents for the second tunnel Lot will be delivered to the contractors in spring 2018. This Lot consist of 2 TBM drives.
