The underground stations of the Jakarta MRT Phase 1 Project were constructed by the top-down cut-and-cover method in alluvial and diluvial soil strata. The typical diaphragm wall for underground stations has a thickness of 1.0 m, and a depth of 30 – 21 m. The monitoring of lateral deflections of diaphragm walls was conducted at all stations. The monitored maximum lateral deflections of diaphragm walls is in the range of 10 – 4 mm, much less than was indicated by the pre-analysis conducted by the finite element method (FEM). The back analysis by the beamspring frame analysis, using revised soil parameters was carried out for describing the monitoring results. The results from the back analysis are much closer to the monitoring results, which confirmed that the stiffness and strength of the soil are higher than the original values. The revised soil parameters were used for redesigning and increasing the efficiency of the construction works.
