The position of tunnels in their immediate environment and the transportation network is changing. Sustainability is becoming more important and increasingly higher demands are placed on the reliability and availability of tunnels throughout their entire life cycle. Faced with a huge renovation task, COB has formulated a longterm vision, to support and challenge all stakeholders, including the government, market, science and society, to sketch the future development of tunnel renovations and determine the knowledge gaps that have to filled. This paper described the roadmap that has been established and outlines the four focus areas: adaptive installations; a different approach to civil construction and renovation; a digital tunnel twin; and the tunnel as a valuable part of its environment. For each of these areas the ultimate goal to be reached by 2050 has been sketched, and the first research and development initiatives have been outlined.Tunnel renovation, New-build tunnel, Adaptivity, More value, Fewer disturbances.
