Tokyo Metro Co. Ltd. operates 9 routes in Capital area in Japan, total length of the routes is 195.1km. The total length of tunnels is 166km.In Japan, subway tunnels constructed by the open-cut method are typically horizontally oriented double cell box tunnels with rectangular cross sections. The open-cut method involves excavating parts of public roads, installing tunnel frames in place and then covering them. Some tunnels had to be built under narrow roads in Tokyo; thus, there exist some vertically oriented double cell box tunnels with vertically long cross sections. To connect the sections, there exist some parts with cross sections. In this paper, we refer to these continuously connected areas as “tunnel sections with non-uniform heights.” In these sections, the tunnel cross section changes gradually in the vertical or horizontal direction. Earthquake Resistance Standards for Railway Structures in Japan contain explanations of the thinking and methodology of verifying the seismic performance of horizontally oriented double cell box tunnels in subways. However, the Standards do not contain any explanation of tunnel sections with non-uniform heights. Seismic loads acting on such distinctly shaped tunnel cross sections result in complex deformation modes that could lead to localization of damage or failures that are difficult to repair. The experimental examination and analytic examination were carried out for the purpose of behavior grasp at the earthquake of the tunnel sections with non-uniform heights tunnel. The experimental examination performed the dynamic vibration experiment that gave the static loading experiment and earthquake vibration that simulated action of the ground movement at the time of the earthquake for single line box type section tunnel and tunnel sections with non-uniform heights tunnels. The analytic examination reproduced a static loading experiment and the dynamic vibration experiment using FEM which could consider the ground and the interaction of the structure.
