In the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Station, 4 subway lines converge at the crossroads of Tokyo's Ginza and Hibiya commercial districts, resulting in continuous congestion in the station from passengers making transfers and above ground with business people and tourists. As a part of a larger urban development plan, a new large-scale underground concourse has been planned to connect the subway station (Hibiya Line platform) with the surrounding buildings in order to alleviate congestion. The initial construction plan was to utilize the cut and cover tunneling technique resulting in a large rectangular cross-section. However, as there were various additional construction requirements from the construction planning division, the jacking method that used a rectangular, large cross-sectional, high density slurry TBM with swinging cutters, was selected. This paper will detail the construction of the passageway.
