A single shield hard rock TBM is set to bore in New York State where it will encounter water inflows with high volume and pressures up to 20 bar. To overcome these difficult conditions, the TBM is designed to control 2500 gpm (9500 l/min) water inflows and seal against 30 bar (20 bar with a 1.5 safety factor). The TBM will bore a tunnel to replace part of the Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies half the raw water to New York City. The 2.5 mi (4.0 km) bypass tunnel passes beneath the Hudson River in shale and limestone. Due to the high water pressure and inflows the TBM was designed with a new main bearing sealing system and retractable muck ring that seals against the bulkhead to close off the TBM. The machine is equipped with two dewatering systems, and multiple drilling and grouting schemes to ensure that the TBM can mitigate extreme conditions. This paper will cover the unique aspects of the project and TBM design.
