  Challenges for Tunneling in Downtown Los Angeles for the Regional Connector Project

  Soft ground tunneling for the Regional Connector transit project in downtown Los Angeles has many urban challenges including typical risk issues of damage to buildings and utilities, community disruption, and environmental impact. The actions to meet the challenges known at the time of tender and how they have been addressed at the start of tunnel construction are presented. Unique measures are being taken to start tunneling under existing buildings immediately upon launching the EPBM with very low ground cover. Special instrumentation will provide more precise ground movement data above the tunnel shield to optimize operation of the EPBM to minimize lost ground and implement compensation grouting only as needed.
