Structure-borne sound from tunnelling works – measurements and predictions

Preliminary noise studies for the Follo Line Project in Norway, consisting of two 20 km train tunnels, was based on a prediction model developed by processing measurement results from Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. As the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Follo Line Project started out in an area with no dwellings in the immediate vicinity of the tunnels, this is an opportunity to modify and calibrate the model and predictions, and possibly reduce the rather large uncertainties embedded in the model. Measurements of vibrations and structure-borne sound are carried out both on the ground above the tunnels and in an escape tunnel running along the main tunnels. The distances between immission points and main tunnel walls are in the range of approximately 10-300 m. As analysis and post processing of the measurement data is not finished, this paper presents some preliminary measurement results and an outline for calculation of source characteristics and prediction of sound propagation in hard rock.
