High costs and ecological impacts of separation and disposal of used bentonite suspen-sions are driving forces of the operating efficiency of slurry shield tunneling. This paper introduces a new method for improvement of the conventional separation processes by means of electrocoagulation. This method is based on the physical principles of electrolysis and consists of applying electrical current into the slurry (bentonite suspension) that should be deposited, causing the particles to coagulate. In order to investigate the applicability of this method to bentonite suspensions, the experimental laboratory setup was designed and the suspension was subjected to parametric study. The effectiveness of the process was evaluated through three parameters: percentage of coagulated soil, decrease of the density of remaining suspension and increase of the filtrate water release. The results show several advantages of this method in comparison to the conventional separation process.
