  Implementing contractors' know-how in early construction project phases – finding a way for the Austrian tunnel construction industry

  This paper studies possibilities of early contractor involvement and its potential for op-timizing the project management of tunnel constructions in the Austrian tunnel industry. Considering the life cycle of a construction project, it is obvious that the highest potential for optimization lies within early project phases. It is therefore necessary to investigate the possibilities of implementing the know-how of tenderers, or rather the later contractor, in early phases. In a first step, alternative forms (e.g. Early Contractor Involvement, Project Alliance) must be analyzed. In a second step, the question of whether these alternative forms can be applied in Austria needs to be investigated. A significant point that must be answered is whether these alternative forms of implementing contractors’ know-how correspond with Austrian and European procurement law.
