  Analysis of Safety Issues and Installation Time of Innovative Pipe Umbrella Installation Methods

  Pipe umbrella support systems have been used successfully for tunneling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970’s. Due to further developments of the drilling machinery, this pre-support system is used at shallow tunnels in weaker ground conditions on a regular basis. Pipe umbrella pipes are installed stepwise by connecting pipes to each other so the processes “coupling” and “uncoupling” are performed regularly. Each of these steps needs time and can be assessed with a risk of additional time in case of different possible problems. A comparison of different state-of-the-art coupling methods including influences of possible mechanizations will be presented regarding their influence on this factor. There is also a certain risk for injuries of workers.
