  Tunneling through an underground maze

  The northern tunnel contract on the Follo Line project, EPC D&B, is excavating the northern part of the Follo Line through Ekeberg Hill. One of the main challenges on the project is the closeness to the already existing infrastructure and caverns. Several of the tunnels on the project will cross or come very close to the existing infrastructure, and there are several challenges related to the low overburden and vibrations from blasting. To satisfy the demands to the excavation in the area, drill and split became an alternative to blasting. This article gives an introduction to the challenges of the project and how they were handled.
