Geopolymer Binders for Tunnel Applications

Geopolymer Binders for Tunnel Applications

R. Myrdal

Pure geopolymers are typically made by mixing fly ash with a highly alkaline and caustic solution. Normally, curing at elevated temperatures is needed to gain acceptable strength development. However, most commercial geopolymer cements and concretes are made without the alkaline/caustic solution, but instead made by adding slag or another calcium based material to the mix. Possibly, the durability properties of such geopolymers could be negatively affected by the presence of calcium. An attempt has been made to develop liquid accelerating admixtures capable of shortening setting times and speeding up early age strength of calcium-free geopolymer binders. Short setting times and high early age strength were obtained, whilst the long term strength was quite low.
