In deep tunnels with high overburdens, geological predictions are usually not very reliable. The geological and hydrogeological risk of unexpected events caused by dangerous rock mass reactions remains high. Reducing such risks to a minimum during excavation is a must. For this reason, when excavating both with explosives and with a TBM, prospection measures beyond the rock face should be part of the basic work sequence. This article describes the experience gained while excavating a series of tunnels belonging to the Brenner Base Tunnel system, both using a TBM and explosives in hard rock. During excavation, various types of prospection measures beyond the rock face were carried out, that were fundamental in reducing geological risk.
