On shallow tunneling, the assessment of risks in terms of surface settlements and tunnel face stability remains a huge challenge for engineers. In the aim to design conventional tunneling in an automatic sequenced process with risks analysis, a new 3D analysis software has been developed based on the finite element software CESAR-LCPC. This paper intends to present the features of the new software through different case studies of shallow tunneling with and without presupport systems. These studies include sensitivity analysis on geotechnical parameters in order to measure their risks of excavation failure and of excessive settlements on surface buildings. It is shown that the software can help the tunnel engineer to easily compare several designs and thus opt for the design with the least possible risk. Finally, discussions about the efficiency of presupport systems and the importance of risk management are provided.
