Tunnelling with tunnel boring machines (TBM) has become the selected excavation method for some infrastructure and hydropower projects in Norway the last years. Planning and preinvestigation of ground conditions is known to be costlier and more demandable for TBM tunnelling than for conventional drill and blast (D&B) tunnelling, which is the most commonly used excavation method in Norway. This paper aims to present and discuss the needs for proper pre-investigations for hard rock and soft ground TBM tunnelling, and compare recent experiences from TBM projects in Norway and elsewhere. The paper presents recent TBM projects different strategies of selecting preinvestigations together with rough cost estimates for executing pre-investigations and discussions about the amount of investigations for different TBM tunnelling projects.
