Tunneling Alternatives below Syracuse, New York
The I-81 viaduct through the City of Syracuse, New York was constructed in 1960s. Portions of the I-81 viaduct structure are nearing the end of their lifespan. The New York State Department of Transportation is planning for future I-81. Tunneling and underground solutions are among the alternatives under consideration. One shallow and two deep tunnel alternatives were investigated. The shallow tunnel would be a cut and cover tunnel through soils overlying bedrock. The deep tunnel alternatives would be primarily bored through the bedrock. One deep tunnel alternative would include connecting ramps to existing highways and the other deep tunnel would not connect to the existing highways. Several geotechnical, structural, environmental and transportation challenges were identified such as high ground water table, man-made fills and soft soils, highly variable rock surface elevations, underpinning requirements for the existing viaduct, saline ground water, and natural ground water flow in downtown Syracuse.Recipient :
