Aerodynamic sizing of a high-speed train tunnel is a critical design point as it conditions the choice of the tunnel cross section and therefore strongly impacts the project costs and planning. This article contributes to a better understanding of this subject by describing the aerodynamic studies and tests conducted for the Saverne tunnel (double tubes, 4 km long) lying on the LGV East High Speed Line under the Vosges mountains in France and commissioned in 2016. The article addresses the following subjects: Review of the criteria used for the aerodynamic sizing, in relation with the pressure variations in the tunnel and in the train to insure acceptable tympanic comfort and safety levels to the passengers.
