London Underground and the contractor Dragados were looking for a solution that offered efficient use of space and resources, therefore a combined lining system, comprising primary and secondary fibre reinforced sprayed concrete linings was adopted. The paper will highlight the design considerations for different components of the combined lining, including special load cases that are critical for the combined lining components, and the numerical modelling method employed to determine the load sharing between the linings. A series of 3D Finite Element models, representing the staged construction of the BSCU works, were used for the analysis of the linings so as to allow for more realistic simulation of ground movement during lining installation. The optimised lining obtained led to significant savings in excavation material, required concrete and construction time. This fulfilled the client’s aims with respect to sustainability while working in a high profile urban environment.
