Experience from the Ulriken tunnel, the first large TBM railroad tunnel in Norway
6900 m of the 7690 m long Ulriken tunnel is being bored with a 9,3 m open gripper TBM, next to an existing tunnel excavated by drill and blast in the 1960s. The new tunnel will significantly increase the capacity on the heavily rail trafficked line between Bergen and Arna Skanska and Strabag was awarded to perform the contract in a joint venture, entering new land both from a technical and from a cooperation perspective. This paper will present the challenges and experience gained so far on the project. Technical aspects of the TBM drive in hard rock will be highlighted, with a focus on the interaction between the TBM and the Norwegian rock mass.Recipient :
