Box Tunnel under XVII-th century arch Trujillo Bridge in Lima (Peru)
As a result of the urban growth of Lima in recent years and increase in private transport, traffic jams are commonplace. In order to relieve this congestion, a new highway connecting Callao district and the Historical Centre is currently being built. Due to the lack of available space and given that the Historical Centre is UNESCO World Heritage, a tunnelling solution underneath a 1,8km of section of the Rímac River was considered during low water level period using cut & cover procedure. A trench was excavated in the coarse gravelly soils, and the structure (two barrels box frame) was cast-in-place. However, the alignment of the tunnel underpasses an ancient XVII-th stone arch bridge, Trujillo Bridge (spans of 10m and weight of 3000tonnes per pier), where a heavy lifting operation was required in order to not damage it.Recipient :
