A conceptual study on the development of an underground metro rail system in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
This paper highlights the need for the metro rail development in the Kathmandu Valley and sets out the economic and technical opportunities for such development. A map of the proposed railway network for the Kathmandu Metro is presented. The concept of cross-rail in Kathmandu and the prospect of developing a network of underground rail tunnels beneath the city is discussed. The region is seismically active and the ground conditions within the valley are complex due to the nature of lacustrine deposition. This paper will also highlight and discuss the challenges imposed by the nature of the subsurface soils and geology of the valley for such potential development and look at how to build appropriate rail infrastructure in the local context.Recipient :
