Natural gases are a commonly acknowledged hazard to construction of tunnels. Combustible gases from the ground can mix with air in the excavation to form an atmosphere that can explode in a low gas concentration level. Gases occur in a wide variety of geologic conditions so detailed investigation is necessary. A new gas concentration detection system with FTIR spectrometer is proposed and performed in a high potential gas inflow tunnel in Taiwan. The relationship between gas concentration and stratum characteristics, such as ground depth, rock type, and fracture pattern, were established by the proposed method. The potential hazards of combustible gases inflow during tunnel construction can be well identified based on the investigation data. Tunnel explosion hazard would be reduced by means of well understanding of geological condition and cautious construction management.
