The form of shield tunnel cross sections has gone through several phases, from rectangular to circular, and then to non-circular. To study the key design and construction techniques of quasi rectangular shield tunnels, Chinese engineers have chosen to build the world’s first quasi rectangular shied tunnel in the construction of one interval of Ningbo Metro Line 3, taking into consideration both the space utilization of tunnels under different cross section forms and the ground settlement that may be caused by tunneling. To support further promotion and applications of the quasi rectangular shield method, this paper gives a brief introduction of the scientific research as well as the engineering application of the project, including the shield and lining design, the full-scale lining test, the model test for synchronous grouting, and the ground settlement induced by tunneling etc., demonstrating the construction method of the shield tunnel with a brand new cross section form.
