The new RBS railway station: the excavation of two large shallow caverns below the railway main station of Bern (Switzerland)
The upgrade of the RBS railway station in Bern requires the excavation of two large station caverns with two cross-passages and four staircases. The new underground structures are mainly in soft rock and partially below the ground water table. Along with the minor overburden of the station caverns, the underground excavations are demanding because of the execution under operation of the existing railway infrastructure and in parallel to the upgrading works for the SBB railway station, thus leading to major restrictions concerning logistics and construction schedule. Moreover, the caverns underpass existing foundations and settlement sensitive buildings, consequently requiring specific measures for load-carrying as well as settlement reduction and compensation, respectively. For the realization of an access shaft and an access tunnel, also demanding tunneling in water-bearing soil by means of ground freezing is necessary.Recipient :
