Despite the presence of some rock abrasivity tests, the tunneling industry still seeks for a reliable method to simulate the real TBM excavation condition and to connect the test results with the cutter life data from the field. New abrasion test (NAT) is a test developed in Hyundai Engineering and Construction to improve some of the deficiencies of the previously developed hardrock abrasivity tests. Major issues discussed in this paper include the new test working procedure and the correlations among NAT disc wear index (DWI) and other relevant rock parameters. Real data from some TBM tunneling projects are used to find a correlation between DWI and the actual cutter weight loss. A full-scale test is also used to validate the obtained correlation. The final section of this paper explains the implication of using this new test in evaluating the optimum intervention interval length and the number of worn-out cutters for a recently completed project.
