Addressing Uncertainties in upgrade of Victorian tunnels as part of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme
The Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) aims to enhance train capacity of the main line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. As part of the scheme two brick lined tunnels along the route required upgrading, which comprised replacement of sections of track and ballast with a slab track system, fitting of new drainage and Overhead Line Equipment. Both tunnels were constructed in the 19th century and presented similar problems; their age, coupled with multiple repairs and reconstruction throughout their operational lives, often with a lack of recorded information, has resulted in significant uncertainties as to the current performance of the tunnel lining. This has required a design approach that has looked to minimise any additional stresses so as to avoid any detrimental effect on the existing lining. Given the limited records and information, extensive ground investigations have been completed to enable the design.Recipient :
